What drives our curriculum?

At Prae Wood Primary School, equality means everyone is welcome regardless of individual differences, personal circumstances and need. We provide eaual opportunities for all to ensure everyone feels valued, respected and included. Our lessons are inclusive and resources and support are available for all, although these differ on an individual or group basis. In order to achieve equality, it is essential to implement equity by recognising that everyone has different starting points, individual learning and development needs and progress at different rates. Children learn that circumstances do not define a person: everyone is entitled to have dreams and goals to strive for, even if they must take an alternative route or need support to get there. Therefore, we provide equal opportunities for all, by removing barriers to meet every child's needs. We tailor our curriculum through careful planning and differentiation to ensure that all children are provided with meaningful learning experiences.

At Prae Wood Primary School, our curriculum is designed to ensure it is relevant to our children and therefore engages and inspires them to become lifelong learners. We aim to broaden our childrens' learning with extracurricular activies, educational visits and trips and other enrichment experiences (e.g. immersion activities to introduce new topics).

Our curriculum builds on childrens' prior knowledge , making relevant connections and promoting active learning. Opportunities are provided for children to take risks and make mistakes and encourage them to learn from what went wrong, supporting them to develop their ability to cope with failure as well as success. Through our curriculum, children at Prae Wood have the desire to know more and are brave enough to ask the questions that matter. We value diversity and celebrate difference by encouraging children to be interested in other people, places and times.

At Prae Wood Primary School, children's personal and social responsibility is developed through understanding their part in the whole school and wider community. We believe it is essential that children are self-aware (understanding their likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses, feelings etc), socially aware (being respectful of other people's feelings, beliefs and perspectives) and confident (finding their own voice). Through opportunities to work with others, the importance of collaboration and team spirit is promoted in order for children to learn to be tolerant of everyone. We develop independent learing and resilience so that children have high aspirations for themselves. We aim to help children envision the countless possibilities ahead of them and 'dream big' about the life they could lead, the places they could visit and the successes they could achieve. Children are encouraged to embrace all available opportunities, even those which make them feel a little uncomfortable, and challenge themselves to be the best that they can be.
