This week we have enjoyed numerous activities for Sustainability / Arts Week (linking with the Great Big Green Week across the UK and SusFest in St Albans).
On Monday an assembly was held by a guest speaker, Virginia, from The Green Gorilla Team, who explained what Sustainability is and launched our exciting week! We know there are 5 ways to be sustainable: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse and Rot!
Using various mediums, children have created pieces of art during the week to communicate how they felt about climate change hoping to make audiences aware of it's impact. Not only should we use less energy, children know that we should look after what we have.
All classes have been enjoying some outdoor learning; learning to respect the nature around them and learning about what we can do around school and where we live to look after the environment in a positive way.
KS2 children have taken part in some fantastic Eden project workshops, entitled 'Sustainability Superstars' or 'Rainforest Connections'.
Year 1 to Year 5 pupils have also all taken part in a community and school grounds litter pick and they have all planted a sunflower seed, which will grow in school over the coming two weeks. Then they will come home to be replanted (if possible).
We are holding a sunflower competition and would love to hear how your child's sunflower has grown (in m) in September. There will be a KS1 and KS2 prize!
Finally, a working party of parents came together on Thursday afternoon to rehome a hedgehog shelter, create some hanging habitats and work on some new initiatives, following a visit from some Wilder School Champions (from the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust).
